  • Les parapluies de cherbourg / The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

    The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), directed by Jacques Demy, is a bittersweet romance that follows the story of Geneviève and Guy, two young lovers tragically torn apart by the Algerian war. The dialogue of the film is entirely in musical form; which, along with the vibrant colors, brings a whimsical touch to the mundane realism of the movie. Themes of love, sacrifice and coming of age weave a story as beautiful as it is heartbreaking.

    In the rural, semi-desert region in the north of Senegal known as Futa, Adama is destined to lead his village, but a tragic romance with Banel at its center, pulls the two away from this imperious tradition. As a devastating drought strikes, the young lovers must navigate their desires and the expectations of their community. With moments of both surreal and natural beauty, the film brings to life a poignant story of love, identity, and self-discovery.

  • Linda veut du poulet / Chicken for Linda

    Chicken for Linda (2023), is an animated film directed by Sébastien Laudenbach and Chiara Malta. It tells a heartwarming story of a mother and a daughter. Paulette, after giving her daughter, Linda, an unfair punishment, feels guilty and promises to make Linda chicken with peppers. A general strike causes the entire town to shut down, including all grocery stores, making it very difficult for Paulette to keep her promise. Linda’s innocent request for her favorite meal turns into a series of adventures as Paulette goes to great lengths to find a chicken for Linda.

we’re back for year two!

Immerse yourself in the language and step through a cinematic portal to new continents. Hosted on the Boise State campus, this three-week festival offers more than just movies. Each screening features a guest faculty speaker from a variety of disciplines, followed by an optional community discussion. Thanks to a generous grant from the Albertine Foundation, our lineup has evolved. This year, the BFFF will screen six critically acclaimed films, ranging from iconic New Wave classics to contemporary action. There is truly something for everyone.
